WALK IN THE PARK: Explore solar system at the lido

-

YOU may not expect to be able to explore the planets of our solar system while you take a walk around Ruislip Lido but that’s exactly what Hillingdon Council is offering visitors this summer.

New displays plot the planets with photographs, text and audio descriptions along the trail of the 60-acre lake.

Hillingdon Council worked with the West of London Astronomical Society and sign makers Glyphics to create the display, which features a scale model of the solar system.

The journey begins with the sun, which is located opposite the new boathouse, and the other planets are plotted in order, outwards from the sun. Each is marked by an informative display board which features information and pictures taken from spacecraft, or as viewed in the sky from earth.

A dwarf planet and a comet are also included.

At each board a QR code is available to scan with mobile devices, which link to the trail’s audio guide.

Cllr Ray Puddifoot, Leader of Hillingdon Council, said: “This new interactive walk is the latest initiative in the Council’s Lido improvement programme which we hope residents of all ages will enjoy.

“The trail offers a real learning opportunity and a different way to experience the lake, which we hope residents of all ages will enjoy.

“This project forms part of the council’s lido enhancement project, which continues to improve access and facilities at this outstanding site.”
