Animal Rescue with Marion Garnett

Dedicated animal expert Marion Garnett, founder of the Ealing Animal Welfare Bazaar, continues her column

Harefield Gazette - - ANIMAL NEWS -

DO you ever leave things too late? For several weeks I’ve been thinking that the next dog I featured from National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) would be Bessie – an affectionate staffie who has been waiting for a home since September 2014 when she arrived at the Watford rehoming centre from a dog pound.

But, when it came to writing the column, there was always a more needy dog to feature first. Then, after not visiting the rehoming centre for a while where I would see her, when I went to look up her details online at NAWT, I got a shock – she wasn’t there. I knew she hadn’t been reserved and my first reaction was “I left it too late, she’s died”.

Fearing the worst, I contacted Jackie De Friez, Manager of the Watford centre, who said because, for the past two years, there had been little interest in Bessie from visitors to Watford, she had been transferred to Trindledown, NAWT’s centre in Berkshire.

Now, I’ve been to Trindledown in the past and know that, like all NAWT’s six rehoming centres, it’s a very special place. But Trindledown is special in a different way.

When it opened, it was the first purpose-built rehoming centre for elderly pets (Bessie is 5-10 years old). All dogs and cats have sofas, televisions and curtains in their rooms. They also rehome horses, donkeys, goats, birds and pigs (Don’t even think about it unless you’re experienced in pig keeping and have pig-friendly facilities).

Then I thought, it’s not too late to feature Bessie. She might be further away but if you want a lovely staffie, Bessie could still be your girl – and you could enjoy a trip into the country to meet her. Tracy Waldron, manager of Trindledown says Bessie has settled well although she was, initially, unsure of the goats. She loves being with people, playing with squeaky toys and cuddling. If you’d like to meet Bessie she’s moved to Trindledown Farm, Wantage Road, Great Shefford, Berkshire RG17 7DQ.

Meanwhile, back at our local NAWT centre, they are having a Halloween event and pumpkin hunt from October 24-31 (11am-3pm). You can also meet all the animals there who haven’t got a television to watch but would love to join you on your sofa to watch yours. The centre is at Tylers Way, Watford By Pass WD25 8WT.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE: For friendly staffie Bessie
