MATTRESSES, appliances and pieces of wood have all been dumped under the A40 in one of the largest amounts of fly-tipping seen in the Hillingdon area.

A staggering pile of rubbish has been left under the fly-over, east of the Grand Union Canal, raising concerns about fire safety.

Images taken by Hillingdon resident Maggie Ditchburn reveal the astonishing heaps, some of which are tipped into pools of water.

Other photographs, which were taken on Saturday (February 18), show the appalling mess of appliances strewn across the site amidst other household rubbish.

Mrs Ditchburn told the Gazette: “The amount of rubbish being tipped is becoming hazardous, polluting the waterway and the possibility of a fire could cause damage to the fly-over and traffic chaos.”

Those who are found responsible for fly-tipping in either Hillingdon Borough or Buckinghamshire could risk facing huge fines and being prosecuted should the council take the case to court.

It is not clear whether Highways England or Hillingdon Council are responsible for the land in question where the rubbish has been dumped, but the Gazette is waiting on a response from the council for more information.

However, rubbish in water has to be dealt with by the Environment Agency.

Westminster and Ealing borough have both reported an “alarming rise” in fly-tipping across west London, which they said will be tackled with hefty fines.
