Animal Rescue with Marion Garnett

- Dedicated animal expert MARION GARNETT, founder of the Ealing Animal Welfare Bazaar, continues her column

“ELEPHANTS are nothing” – that was the derogatory comment made to me by a passer-by at the Silent Vigil today in Parliament Square against the ivory trade.

“I’m concerned about people”, he announced importantly. It seems to me, it is possible to be concerned about both.

Even if you are able to ignore the suffering elephants endure in being killed for their ivory tusks and their orphaned babies, the plight of the elephant is cause for concern not just for elephants but also for people.

Demand for ivory fuels the killing of around 35,000 ele- phants a year. If this rate continues, elephants could be extinct in many parts of the wild in 15 years. In one way, the passer-by is right, in years to come, if people want to see a live elephant, they will look for one and nothing will be there.

If you want to help stop the cruelty, visit stae.org or actionfor elephantsuk.org.

Elephants have strong family ties and can move fast if one of their own is in trouble but maybe not quite as fast as lurchers like Hollow.

Lurchers are usually a cross between a sighthound (for example, a greyhound) and a collie or terrier. They share many of the sighthound traits such as keen vision and a talent for sprinting. They can also be couch potatoes. Hollow is looking for an owner who understands lurchers. He likes other dogs and could live with a dog who could be his role model. He can’t live with cats.

If you are interested in homing this friendly boy, he is at the Dogs Trust, Harvil Road, Uxbridge.

If you’re looking for something to do during half term, NAWT is hosting a Halloween Spook-tacular starting on October 21.

From 11am to 4pm each day, explore a witch’s house and join a ghost hunt. On October 28 and 29, there will be extra things to do including a witch’s cooking pot and a potion room to make your own bottle of spells. And you can meet many of the 200 animals at the centre who are looking for a home at the NAWT rehoming centre, Tylers Way, Watford by-pass, WD25 8WT.
