UNITED BOSS’S WARNING TO PLAY-OFF RIVALS
HAYES & Yeading boss Paul Hughes fired a warning to the club’s play-off rivals after seeing his side deliver another attacking masterclass to finish third in the Evo-Stik League South East.
Having put five past Barton Rovers at the SkyEx Community Stadium, Hughes roared: ‘’Everyone fears our goalscoring record. We’ve scored the most goals in the league and that speaks volumes of our attacking play.
‘’I think anyone that comes up against that has something to be concerned about.’’
After running riot with six goals in their last home fixture against Egham Town, United continued their rich vein of goalscoring form when they took the lead mid-way through the first half, thanks to a fantastic strike from Laste Dombaxe.
The former Tottenham academy player stepped onto a lay off on the edge of the area before whipping it into the far corner of the net.
United doubled their lead minutes before half-time when Duncan Culley fired home his 21st goal of the season. Spyros Mentis then scored a delightful goal early in the second half when he lobbed Rovers keeper Matt Finlay after being played through on goal.
Mentis added another to his rare collection of goals when he arrived unmarked to head home from a corner, before top scorer Manny Duku scored late on to put the icing on the cake and ensured the side go into the play-offs full of confidence.
Hughes reserved special praise for one of the game’s standout performers in leftback Toby Little who picked up two assists and was a con- stant threat with his pin-point crossing.
He said: ‘’Toby’s been like that all season. Absolutely first-class. The delivery was spot-on every single time. That’s how good he’s been.’’
While pleased with his side’s impressive victory, Hughes remained levelheaded and warned them about the dangers of sloppy play in the play-offs, adding: ‘’There’s little bits of the game we weren’t happy with. There were periods we didn’t move it quick enough and were caught on it.
‘’You move into the playoff levels and do that, we’ll get punished, so that’s something we need to work on.’’
Following the results, it was confirmed the club will play Cambridge City in the league’s East division playoff semi-finals, with the tie to be played on Wednesday May 2.
