He’s quirky looking and really quite delightful

TERRIER WITH UNUSUAL APPEARANCE WINS HEARTS OF NEW OWNERS

-

BEAUTY isn’t just skin – or fur – deep, as this sweet terrier proves. And a winning personality can shine through.

Reggie dubbed as ‘ quirky’ looking by potential adopters has found aforever home with companion who has same medical condition

The 11-year-old Yorkshire Terrier was at Dogs Trust West London in Harefield for seven months, and constantly overlooked by potential adopters due to his appearance.

This lovely character weighing only 4.5kg had very little interest, as he was so unusual looking – and therefore did not meet many people’s ideals of the ‘perfect’ dog.

Due to his medical condition; Cushing’s disease, Reggie suffers with fur loss and has a patchy coat, and his rare appearance meant that he was often passed over by potential adopters.

However, this all changed when Annette and Duncan Fairbairn from Hampshire saw Reggie’s profile online.

The couple had already adopted their miniature Yorkshire terrier, Lucy, from Dogs Trust Shoreham in December 2016 – and she too suffers from Cushing’s disease. Aged 13 years old and weighing in at a mere 2.2kg, Lucy also has a very unique appearance.

Annette said: “When our Yorkshire terrier Abby passed away we knew we wanted to find a new companion for Lucy as we could see how lonely she was. We knew that it was going to be a bit of a task finding her a suitable canine brother or sister because we really needed a dog that would fit in with her age, size and health issues.

“We looked around online and eventually found Reggie at Dogs Trust West London in February this year, and were delighted that the two of them got on really well at our regular visits. We were a little nervous about getting another dog at first, but, when the time came to collect Reggie, it was obvious that they were going to be really good for each other.

“As they both suffer with Cushing’s disease they need very similar care. They take medication every day to control the effects of the illness. We cope very well with their health issues, and they both have a selection of coats in a rainbow of colours to keep them warm in every situation.”

Dogs Trust West London’s rehoming centre manager Richard Moore commented: “Poor Reggie really didn’t catch people’s eye when they were looking for a dog.

“We’re delighted the Fairbairns found it in their heart to see past Reggie’s looks and got to know his wonderful personality. It just goes to show that there really is the perfect home for every dog out there!”

Duncan added: “Everyone is always surprised to see how much they play in light of their advancing ages!

“It really is worth it to take on older dogs, they bring us so much joy and laughter – and we make it our mission to make their last few years as awesome as possible.”
