A new pet for the new year?

-

HAPPY New Year! We hope you have all had a lovely start to 2019.

The branch has had a busy and productive 2018 with over 600 animals going off to new loving homes. However, we still have around 100 animals in our care looking for new homes for 2019.

Some of our current residents include Elsa a very sweet Syrian hamster. Elsa is one of 20 signed over to an officer on welfare grounds.

Elsa is a gorgeous girl. She spends a lot of time in the tubes of her large luxurious accommodation - we are not sure whether she finds the deluxe cage too big after the tiny little home she had been used to or she simply likes living in the tubes.

If you can persuade her to come out then she is actually great with handling – reasonably calm and definitely likes a cuddle.

Elsa is looking for a home with adult owners or those with older kids. She does spend a lot of time sleeping and is not the most active girl even for a Syrian hamster. Generally, when people think of adopting a pet they think of cats and dogs? However if you do not have the space for a large animal or the time to take a dog for a walk why not consider something smaller.

Hamster hamsters can make great pets, and can be really friendly with humans once they’ve been tamed, they will be most active at dawn and dusk. Depending on the type of hamster, they usually live for around two years.

Some may live for longer so you should be prepared to look after a hamster for a few years, giving you lots of time to create happy memories with your pet.

Although this may appear a short time in comparison to other pet animals, owning a hamster is still a big responsibility and commitment.

Is a small animal the right pet for you? Can you afford £5 a week for food? Can you give your pet a safe and secure space to live in? Can you be at home for part of every day? If needed can you afford veterinary treatment throughout your pet’s life? Can you afford to board your pet or arrange for family or friends to look after your pet while you are on holiday?

If you can answer YES to these questions then contact us to find out about adopting a small animal.

There is an adoption fee of £10 per hamster.

If you think you could offer a forever home to one of our rats or any of the other small animals, cats and rabbits we currently have looking for a home for life then please call us on (020) 8966 9688 or email us at: info@rspcamiddlesex.org.uk.
