Harefield Gazette

High density flats and living

-

I READ the letter “Blocks of flats in the Borough” [Gazette March 6] which refers to Barbara Fisher’s article about proposals to build apartment blocks in Harefield Road, Uxbridge.

The unnamed letter writer says that ‘massive, densely-packed apartment blocks’ have been built in Yiewsley and West Drayton, and those areas will now be deemed “urban” (built-up) areas. The letterwriter warns that this may happen in other parts of this nice Hillingdon borough.

A main cause of this new highdensity building may be because an estimated two million extra people have come to live in Britain in the last few years.

For decades our population was about 55 million but this has risen greatly and is predicted to reach around 70 million in the not-toodistant future.

This naturally causes a shortage of housing, school places and hospitals, so I believe we need stricter immigration policies.

On the TV documentary series “Nothing to Declare” we see how vigilant Australia is about who is allowed to come and live in their country. They investigate the reason for each person’s wish to enter Australia and they determine how long they will stay.

If there are any concerns, their immigration officers make phonecalls to check if the would-be incomer is telling the truth.

Anyone who’s been in prison for over a specified time is not normally allowed into their country.

This is so different to Britain’s lax policies where even those found guilty of murder or rape in their own country have been allowed to come and live in the UK. We need to know that anyone coming to live here will be a good law-abiding citizen. Name and address withheld
