Cooking up kindness
DURING this difficult time we have had the chance to see the best in people.
Individuals across London have done all sorts of wonderful things to help vulnerable people and NHS workers, from sewing hospital gowns to organising doorstep exercise classes to keep people fit and healthy.
One man, a security operations manager at Heathrow Airport, runs a charity which in response to the coronavirus crisis has stepped up to support the NHS, vulnerable families, the elderly, the homeless and families that are currently self-isolating. Jaz Gill, from Southall, runs the charity InspiredByHope which aims to ‘help out people everywhere’ –from running blood drives to putting together care packages for the homeless, even volunteering around the world to help those less fortunate.
In response to Covid-19, along with volunteer chefs, Jaz’s charity is making around 4,000 meals a day for delivery to hospitals, shelters and family homes.
Along with kitchen volunteers who help with packing the meals and delivery drivers, they aim to ensure no one goes a day without a meal.
InspiredByHope is also beginning to provide support to pharmacies by dropping off medication to the elderly.
Another Heathrow worker is helping out the NHS by joining a group of more than 4,500 volunteers across the country, made up of people who have access to 3D printers, printing face shields that can be used to protect a frontline worker.
Jakub Hajko, noise performance manager at Heathrow, said: “I have a 3D printer, I have the time and I have the materials.
“My printer hasn’t been switched off in several days. “I’m printing as many face shield frames as I can that can help protect frontline NHS and other medical workers.”
If you have a 3D printer and would like to get involved, find out more information at www.3dcrowd.uk or support them by donating on their Go Fund Me page at gofundmecom/ f/3dcrowd-emergency-3d-printedface-shields.
