A MAN who climbed onto the roof of Southall fire station and remained there for nearly 10 hours has been detained.

Emergency services were called to the station, in Southall High Street, at 9.44pm on Monday July 20, to reports of a man who had climbed a structure.

Police officers, ambulance crews and firefighters rushed to the scene and the man, who was dressed only in white boxer shorts, was found on the roof of one of the fire station’s buildings.

Pictures show the man lying down on the roof, with police officers seemingly negotiating with him.

At one stage, the man was heard to be shouting at police officers.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the man was detained at 7.22am on Tuesday July 21, meaning he spent nine-and-a-half hours on the roof.

A spokesperson for the force said:

“Police were called at 9.44pm on July 20 to concerns for the welfare of a man who had climbed a structure at Southall fire station, Ealing.

“Officers are in attendance and engaging with the man. The National Police Air Service are providing support.”

A spokesperson added on the Tuesday morning: “A man who climbed a structure at Southall fire station, Ealing, last night was brought down safely from the structure at 7.22am this morning.

“He has been detained pending further enquiries.”

More than 10 police vehicles and around four ambulance vehicles were parked in High Street while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The man appeared to be on the roof of one of the buildings to the rear of the station.

Firefighters used a crane to lift officers above the man so they could negotiate with him.
