Animal Rescue with Marion Garnett

- Dedicated animal expert Marion Garnett, founder of the Ealing Animal Charities Fair, continues her column

TWO local animal rehoming centres are inviting us to take part in Halloween events, both of which are likely to be popular and will get booked up quickly.

Firstly, Dogs Trust is organising free family workshops for halfterm. Called How to Stay Safe this Howl-o-ween, the workshops are for children aged seven to 11 and will focus on behaving safely around dogs and being a responsible dog owner.

They take place between 11am and noon in the libraries at Oak Farm (Oct 25), Northwood (Oct 26), Ruislip Manor (Oct 28) and Charville (Oct 29). For details and to book, contact Dogs Trust’s education and community officer at rosie.allen@dogstrust.org.uk.

Secondly, if you are feeling brave, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home are inviting us to take part in the London Halloween Walk on Saturday October 30.

There are three walks to choose from – a wicked 10K walk, a horrific half marathon hike and a terrifying full marathon trek.

All start at the Dungeon, which is deep in The Oval Cricket Ground and will include ghostly routes and zombie stops. For details of how much Battersea would like participants to raise if they choose a fundraising option, see battersea.org.uk where you can register.

if you have any queries, call Battersea’s Events team on 020 7627 7893 or email events@battersea.org.uk. it goes without saying you can dress up.

Funds raised in aid of Battersea will go to help animals like Mica. This gorgeous cat arrived at Battersea after her previous owner moved to a home with no garden and, although she likes being inside, she missed a garden.

She was obviously also missing the exercise as when she arrived she was overweight and had to be put on a diet.

She’s a sensitive girl who enjoys her own space, but will make friends with anyone who goes slowly with her. Once you’re friends, she actively seeks you out to sit next to you. She’s looking for owners who don’t have any major changes planned such as a house move. if you’re interested in homing Mica, see details at battersea. org.uk.

Finally, Battersea have just launched a campaign to celebrate rescued animals. Called Wear Blue for Rescue, they’re calling on people to share their love of rescued animals by telling others of the work that rescues centres do. As part of Wear Blue for Rescue, they’ve launched a new Rescue symbol which they want people to display to indicate support for animals being given a second chance.

you can buy Wear Blue for Rescue items from battersea.org.uk.
