-

DONATIONS for a Brentford basketball coach who was killed saving an elderly woman have raced towards the £70,000 target in just a couple of days, since his stabbing on Friday evening.

Witnesses at the scene said Ali Abucar Ali, 20, stepped in to help well-known barmaid Betty Walsh, 82, on Albany Road at 8pm on Friday November 12.

A touching fundraiser created by his family has raised £67,000 in just a couple of days, describing him as “the most caring, humble, funniest young man”.

It said: “On Friday November 12 we lost a son, a brother and a friend. Don’t have a single memory of him without seeing his amazing smile.”

More than 4,000 people have donated to the basketball coach’s fund, with one donor giving as much as £1,000 in a single donation.

Comments from friends, family, and strangers paid tribute to Arsenal supporter Mr Ali, with some praising his heroic actions which may have prevented Ms Walsh’s death.

Comments included: “Such a brave lad. We need more people like him. What a hero!” and “This young man was selfless and courageous and put the safety of others before his own”.

Keith Cowen said: “Ali was in my daughter’s form at Chiswick. We are all heartbroken for you. Sending love at this awful time.”

More responses on his GoFundMe also revealed the positive effect coach Ali had on his team, with many parents saying he was someone their kids looked up to.

Paul Crockford said: “From our son Markos: You were the best coach. You taught us we were family. We will miss you so much.”

Peter Sowler said: “I know that coach Ali was someone who younger basketball players looked up to.”
