FINAL FLOURISH How to adorn your hair with sparkling jewels this autumn
Brooches, tassels and diamonds adorn hair this season for a playfully embellished look
There was an eccentricity to the beguiling and bejewelled hair at Alexander McQueen, a sense that the models had raided their grandmother’s jewellery boxes and piled the gems onto their locks. But the twinkling charm of these coiffures, also spotted at Rodarte and Erdem, added a welcome note of glamour and glitter to an otherwise unadorned season in make-up and nails. Guido Palau was the stylist who placed the brooches on heads at McQueen. ‘Crazy jewels bring a sense of relaxed romance to beauty,’ he explains. We talk to the experts for their tips on creating this season’s statement hair. ROMANCE
STORY
‘There is an angelic innocence to the hair this season,’ says Odile Gilbert, who created the undone
style at Rodarte. For that same ethereal look and airy volume, try BC Bonacure Color Freeze Shampoo and Spray
Conditioner. BUTTONS AND BOWS For a demure approach, try ‘hairbadashery’, the concept coined by the stylist Adam Reed
at JJS Lee, who wrapped ponytails with ribbons and tied on ‘chic and irreverent tassels’, which swished with the movement of the head.
CHAOS THEORY ‘You want the feeling that you’ve done the hair and accessorising yourself, with a mild feeling of peculiarity,
having chucked in random brooches without rhyme or reason,’ explains Guido Palau, Redken’s global creative director.
‘The more clunky it looks, the more stylish.’ To ensure the accessories stay in place, prep your hair with a texturising
spray such as Ouai Haircare Texturizing
Hair Spray, £22.
BIG AND BOLD
For abundant volume upon which to pin your finery, dry with a diffuser for added dimension.
‘Use your fingers and take small sections, working with your hands to twist and squeeze the hair to create loose waves that feel easy, effortless and undone,’
says Gilbert. NATURAL TOUCH Whether you go for Erdem’s simple Thirties pinned roll, McQueen’s haphazard chignon or Rodarte’s fresh-out-of-the-water mermaid lengths this season, you can customise your hair to suit yourself. However, movement
matters, ‘and your hair must look natural and organic, with touchable hold’, says Gilbert.
