Psychedelic band still looking Pretty good
Hayes FM presenter Hughie Dixon reviews the live band scene
PSYCHEDELIC 1960s legends The Pretty Things play The Horns in Watford tomorrow (Thursday) – £28 on the door will gain you access to witness one of Britain’s most influential acts of all time. David Bowie covered two of their tracks, Rosalyn and Don’t Bring Me Down, for his 1973 Pin Ups album, which paid homage to his heroes.
Two years previously Bowie had written Oh You Pretty Things for his Hunk Dory album.
If those aren’t nods of approval from one of the greatest pop artists in history, then I don’t know what is.
Formed in 1963, they took their name from a Willie Dixon song ‘Pretty Thing’ and went on to make 12 hugely successful studio albums between 1965 and 2015.
Personally, I’d advise anyone unfamiliar with the sounds of The Pretty Things to download SF Sorrow (1968) which is a fine introduction to their work before getting yourself down to The Horns, in Hempstead Road, on Thursday.
Hayes’ dynamic divas of DIY indie pop, The Tuts, have their album launch party on Sunday at The Lexington, in Pentonville Road.
You may still be able to scoop up the last remaining tickets via www. thelexington.co.uk, but hurry.
