Calling out for original acts to show talents

Hayes FM presenter Hughie Dixon reviews the live band scene

-

HAYES FM has always centred itself on local concerns and the abundance of creative original musical talent in the region is certainly one of those concerns in which we take great pride in highlighting. Personally, I’m constantly on the lookout for original acts to come in to sing and play an unplugged set on my Tuesday night slot at 8pm and now we at Hayes FM are casting the net for local recording artists to email in their original compositions on MP3 or similar formats to be played on our prime time shows.

All we ask is that the material is your own, it is a high quality recording and the lyrics to be pre watershed friendly (that means no swearing or unsavoury content).

So email your tunes to localmusic@hayesfm.org.uk with some information about who you are and where you’re from in the borough and your music will be entered into the Hayes FM computer for our DJs to promote day or night.

My copy of ‘Update Your Brain’, the long awaited debut album from Hayes band and Hayes FM regulars The Tuts (pictured) arrived through the letterbox this week and I’d like to give it a quick, once over review. It’s p positive, political and packs a punch. If you can imagine Billy Bra Bragg being 30 years you younger, female, lou louder and in a band, the then that’s The Tuts.

T The Tuts are what eve every ageing punk or rud rude boy/girl in their rig right mind would wa want their daughter to listen to but that’s no not to say ‘Update Yo Your Brain’ is strictly gi girly. Yes it tackles se sexism and

promotes feminism by sheer example, but there’s a world of situations and predicaments within their music to which we can all relate.

In fact, if there’s anything this album lacks it’s ambiguity, subtlety and metaphor. The Tuts just tell it like it is. ‘Con Man’ and ‘1982’ are my current two favourites but I’m sure that’ll change soon.

The lyric sheet has put me straight on a few things too. Get your copy now. Happy listening.

Be sure to tune into my interactive HayesFM radio show every Tuesday at 8pm to hear live and original performers plus more local live music news.
