ENCHANTING black cats are not just for Hallowe’en They say that every dog has his day. Well, so does every cat, and when you’re a black cat, that day has to be Hallowe’en. As this year’s spookfest creeps ever closer, it’s time to celebrate the black cat in all his or her glory.
Unfairly persecuted throughout history for being supposedly unlucky, the black cat pops up regularly in literature, film and popular culture, from Edgar Allen Poe to Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Who could fail to be entranced by Gobbolino, the Witch’s Cat from the children’s books by Ursula Moray Williams; or Slinky Malinki in the poem by Lynley Dodd, ‘a stalking and lurking adventurous cat’; or, the feline character in the 1934 film ‘The Black Cat’ who starred alongside Boris Karloff and Béla Lugosi?
These days, we tend to see black cats as bringing good luck. However, although animal shelters are full of black cats, they are less in demand than other colours and typically take longer to find their forever homes.

Moving on to dogs, now, and one little chap in particular. Three year old Jake is a very handsome Shih Tzu cross who seems to have rather been passed from pillar to post in his short lifetime. He gets on well with other dogs and cats, but can be a little wary when meeting new humans. We are therefore looking for an experienced home without young children, where Jake can be helped to re-build his trust in people. This little guy has a great character, and just needs the chance to settle into a stable and loving home that really will be forever this time. Over in the cattery, we have Sally Iver. We’ve mentioned her before, but sadly no one has come forward to adopt her, and she is still with us six months later. Sally is a gorgeous girl who was brought to us by one our Inspectors, suffering from several injuries. With treatment and lots of TLC we’re delighted to say she has now made a full recovery. She is a fairly quiet girl who loves human attention and fuss and would prefer to live in a home without any other pets, or children under the age of eight. Sally has long hair which will need regular grooming to keep this pretty cat in tip-top condition. Can you make Sally’s dreams come true?
