LETTING OFF STEAM: Pupils get hands on for science day

Focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and maths

YOUNGSTERS at St Helen’s College in Hillingdon enjoyed a special ‘STEAM Day’ of indoor and outdoor activities and workshops.

Pupils were given the chance to explore the worlds of science, technology, engineering, the arts and maths in memorable ways.

Upper School children took part in activities such as working with zoetropes, creating woodwork structures, learning the ukulele, designing and building birds’ nests and wind structures, clay modelling, flotation device building and a ‘water challenge’.

The youngest children explored colour, changing states, movement and more through building Lego and Beebot mazes, spinning and pendulum art, bubble shapes, pipework construction and ice balloons among other things.

They also enjoyed a visit from a parent from Martin Baker, with whom they investigated parachutes.

The event was a community collaboration, with sessions delivered by St. Helen’s College staff and parents and agencies such as Martin Baker and Affinity Water.

Director of studies Mark Lewis said: “It was a delight to see such energetic sharing of knowledge and particularly wonderful to witness the voyage of discovery undertaken by the pupils on the day.

“The children discovered some interesting facts and skills but more importantly extended their collaborative skills and reinforced their willingness to take on new challenges without fear of failure.”
