THE man from Hayes who was fined £8,000 after he illegally built a major extension to his house has been told he has just six months to knock it down.

Akmal Hussain was prosecuted at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Thursday October 6 and fined the huge sum after being caught by Hillingdon Council .

The 40-year-old built a massive side, rear and loft extension to his house in Colbrook Close, but failed to submit a planning application to the council.

He was issued with a notice forcing him to remove the extensions, but he failed to do so.

In some circumstances, householders can build an extension to a house without applying for planning permission, provided the extension does not cover a significant area of land or is not too tall.

But the Colbrook Close development breached these rules and the resident was taken to court by Hillingdon Council.

The council’s cabinet member for planning, Councillor Keith Burrows, said: “This case illustrates a blatant disregard on behalf of Akmal Hussain for both the law and our residents.

“It is a great win for the council and sends a strong message to anyone who’s thinking about breaching our planning and housing laws.”

Cllr Burrows added: “The planning laws are in place to protect our residents from unsightly, unneighbourly and illegal extensions to property and to avoid increased pressures on local infrastructure and amenities.”
