WHAT do you do if you’re pregnant in Southall, have no one to turn to for advice and you’re scarcely a year old yourself ?
If you follow Sable’s example, you find yourself a dog kennel and give birth there. Sable was also clever enough to find herself a sympathetic human who contacted Hounslow Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) so that Mum and kittens could be taken under their wing.
Sable was an excellent Mother so, now, with both babies safely in their new homes, it’s Sable’s turn to be adopted.
When I met her she was wary at first but, helped by some titbits, within five minutes she showed how friendly she can be.
Her foster carers say she likes to sit on the back of the sofa and prod them for attention. Then occasionally she will stretch her front paws onto their shoulders.

Hopefully, just like Walnut the Whippet, Sable will become a much-loved pet. Many people will have been moved by the sight of Walnut the very ill Whippet having his last walk on the beach in Cornwall. If you remember, Walnut’s owner used social media to invite people to join them for Walnut’s last walk on his favourite beach before he died. News spread and hundreds of people and their dogs joined the walk. The death of a much-loved pet is a sad time and it’s worth knowing that Blue Cross run an excellent pet bereavement support service which provides confidential emotional support to anyone whose pet has died. More details are available from bluecross.org.uk. On a happier note, if you’ve never visited Animal Aid’s Christmas Fayre at Kensington Town Hall, you are missing a treat. The hall will be buzzing with nearly 100 stalls selling animal-friendly goods from ethical companies and charities. It’s the perfect place to meet friends and do your Christmas shopping with a clear conscience. There is also a crèche and children’s workshop. The Fayre takes place on Sunday December 4 (10am-5pm) at Hornton Street W8 7NX.
