Hayes boss keen to add Weiss

PAUL Hughes is hopeful of securing a deal this week to keep on-loan striker Mitchell Weiss at Hayes & Yeading for the rest of the season, writes Jon Batham.

Weiss found his scoring boots in spectacular style last week, scoring a hattrick against Basingstoke on Tuesday night to fire United into the next round of the Southern League Cup, but the current deal with his parent club Hemel Hempstead is due to expire on Saturday.

With youngster Dylan Kearney his only other fit striker, manager Hughes is understandably keen to extend Weiss’ stay in west London.

Discussions have been held with the player and Hughes hopes to thrash out a deal in the next couple of days.

“Mitchell was superb against Basingstoke and has got his shooting boots on at the minute,” said the United gaffer.

“We had a conversation with him yesterday. Nothing is settled yet but we will be talking to Hemel this week.

“We still need more support in forward areas, so we will continue searching whatever happens with Mitchell, but if we can keep him it will be a boost for us.”

One loan deal which has gone through will bring Wealdstone skipper Wes Parker into the fold for a month.

A spate of injuries to the back four has left Hughes light on numbers so he was delighted to bring in an experienced campaigner who he admits would normally be beyond United’s reach.

“The only way we would ever get someone like Wes is if he needed to build up his fitness,” said Hughes.

“He is a superb player to bring in, very experienced [and he] will bring a lot to the dressing room.

“We need him as Tom Broadbent is away with the Army until February and both Darren Locke and Jack Smith are out with hamstring injuries – that’s football.”

Parker’s debut was delayed when the home game with basement boys Cinderford fell foul of a frozen pitch at Holloway’s Park, meaning the focus is now on Saturday’s trip to fellow strugglers Dorchester.

“I’ve watched them, so I know what they are about,” added Hughes.

“They are still in and around things at the bottom a little bit, so if we can get the win we drag them into the mix a bit more.” TRANSFER WINDOW:
