Plastics really aren’t fantastic
WE were deeply saddened by the state of a hedgehog recently brought into our Hillingdon Clinic, after being found entangled in plastic mesh.
Attempts to escape, had caused the plastic to wrap tighter, immobilising and distorting his body and cutting into his skin to cause wounds that had become putrid with infection.
This poor animal was cold, unresponsive and in shock and had clearly been in this state for some time.
While starting the warming process, our vet cut away the tangled plastic, administered fluids and gave antibiotic and pain relief injections.
Staff anxiously monitored for improvement over the next few hours but the hedgehog unfortunately showed little response. In the view of the clinical team who have considerable experience with injured wildlife, the prognosis for this patient was very poor and the decision was sadly taken not to prolong his suffering.
There has been considerable publicity about the devastating impact of plastic pollution on the lives of marine animals and sea birds around our coasts, but let’s not forget the dangers it can also present in our very own back gardens.
Plastic products can cause suffocation, choking, entanglement, entrapment and injuries to our wildlife – potentially resulting in slow and painful deaths. We can all do our bit to help minimise the risk, by checking for hazards and disposing of litter responsibly.

To make a contribution towards the reduction of the number of plastic bags in circulation, our charity shops will no longer be supplying new RSPCA bags for goods bought and a policy for the re-use of plastic bags received by us, has been adopted by all sections of the Branch.

There’s no place like home for Chelsea a 12 years young female Staffie. This lovely girl is desperate to find a new home where she can enjoy her retirement years.
She came into our care after her owner became homeless following a relationship breakdown, and is really missing her family and home. This upheaval in her life is very sad and stressful for her. Chelsea loves to play and to watch her, you would never guess her age.
She also enjoys going out and about and walks well on the lead, with only a little pulling. After playtime, she is happy just to relax with cuddles and a snooze on the sofa. Ideally, she would like a quiet home as an only pet. Can you offer Chelsea all the love and home comforts she misses so much?
If you can offer a loving home to any of our animals, please call us on 01895 833417 or visit www.rspcahillingdonclinic.org.uk to apply online. Thank you as always for your support.
