A crumb of hope for little critters

-

HERE at the branch we currently have three new arrivals; Crumb, Dot and Flea are three lovely Roborovski hamster all around 16 months old.

Originally, from the RSPCA Isle of Wight branch they have unfortunately had no luck finding these hamsters a new home so we have taken them in in the hopes we will quickly be able to find new loving homes for them.

As these hamster are living separately they will need to remain as such with plenty of handling from their new owners, these hamsters are extremely fast and lively which can make them difficult to handle, therefore making them an unsuitable pet for young children.

Owning and caring for hamsters can be very rewarding. Typically, this breed of hamster will live for about three years.

Although this may appear a short time in comparison to other pet animals, owning a hamster is still a big responsibility and commitment. If you would be interested in giving a new home to one of our hamsters, we would love to hear from you.

Prior to adoption we will need to see the cage or tank you will be using and in some cases suggest minor changes that help ensure your accommodation is as hamster friendly as possible. We will also call a few weeks after you have adopted to make sure you and your new pet are adjusting well to your new life together.

The Roborovski Hamster is one of the fastest and most active hamster breeds to own, they will cover a lot of ground each day when dashing around and playing – that means you must have a suitable sized cage for them to run off all that energy. As such, we require a cage size of no less than 50cm wide, which should give enough space to provide suitable enrichment such as tubes, tunnels, bridges and wheels whilst still allowing generous space for the hamster.

Please bear in mind that these recommendations are all minimums - and like many things in life, bigger is better.

Can you meet your Hamsters needs?

■ Can you provide your hamster with a suitable and enriched accommodation of no less than 50cm wide? Roborvski hamster can squeeze through tiny gaps so we would recommend a cage with glass or plastic walls, as they may be able to slip though even the smallest bar spacing.

■ Do you have the time to spend interacting with you hamster every day? As well as to clean their home as often as needed.

If you think you could offer a forever home to these mice or any of our small animals, cats and rabbits we currently have looking for a home for life then please call us on (020) 8966 9688 or email us at: info@rspcamiddlesex.org.uk.
