CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER

-

If there is one room where anything goes – style-wise – the master bedroom is surely it. After all, the bedroom is your haven, a room to truly relax in and the only person you have to impress is yourself. And while that might be great news, it can also be a challenge too. After all, where do you start? Ultimate freedom is liberating but can also be daunting.

Don’t panic, just follow my essential golden rules and you’ll soon find yourself with the bedroom of your dreams.

Most people think clutter is bad. And sometimes it can be.

So the first thing you need to do is go through all the bits and pieces taking up precious space in your bedroom and decide what you need, what you want and what can be thrown away.

But don’t get rid just for the sake of it. If you like something but it doesn’t really fit in with your planned overall scheme for the bedroom, keep hold.

There is a plethora of storage solutions on the market, from upcycled crates and vintage baskets to minimalist cupboards with handless drawers and divan beds, all of which can be used to stow muchloved, if unsightly, belongings.

BEDDING DOWN

Ultimately, the principle purpose of the bedroom is to provide the homeowner with a sanctuary in which to sleep.

That’s why I advise my clients to invest in two things: a good quality bed and made-to-measure curtains.

The benefits of a decent bed and mattress go without saying; most of us spend about a quarter of our life in bed so enjoy it. Test and test until you find the perfect mattress and once you’ve ordered it, indulge in some luxury bedding to up the style stakes.

When it comes to sleep, even the smallest slither of light will affect how much shut-eye you get – no matter how comfortable your bed is.

That’s why I would always recommend a set of made-to-measure curtains. Bespoke curtains will not only set off the décor by framing windows, but will really keep the light out and ensure a great night’s sleep.

PERSONAL EFFECTS

When it comes to choosing your overall look for the bedroom, the key is to be indulgent. What are your passions, your hobbies and your favourite colours? Forget what’s on trend and go with what you love.
