Animal Rescue with Marion Garnett

Dedicated animal expert MARION GARNETT, founder of the Ealing Animal Charities Fair continues her column

WE arrived home this afternoon to find a burgler in the back room calmly taking stock of what was there and helping himself to what he wanted. Caught redhanded, reluctant to introduce himself, he headed for the door and silently glided out – through the catflap.

For different reasons this week’s dog, Siberian Husky, Nikita, can also appear reluctant to meet people. Nikita, who is currently Dog of the Week at Dogs Trust Harefield, can be shy on first meeting but, when she has developed a relationship with you, she is more friendly.

This was apparent when I met her at the rehoming centre. With me, who she hadn’t met before, she spent her time ignoring me and happily exploring the fabulous courtyard at Dogs Trust but, as soon as one of the canine carers appeared who she knew, she immediately went over to him, gently leant against his legs and enjoyed being stroked.

Nikita, who arrived at Dogs Trust from Ireland, is looking for a new owner who has experience of her breed (or similar). She will need access to her own private garden and the Dogs Trust behaviourist will be able to talk to the new owner about her interactions with other dogs. If you’re interested in homing this beautiful girl, see details at dogstrust.org.uk or meet her at Dogs Trust, Harvil Road, Uxbridge.

If you belong to a group that is compiling a programme of events and want an external speaker, it’s useful to know that Dogs Trust’s Supporter Relations Officer, Irene Anidjah is offering to give talks to community groups about the Trust’s work.

She is also able to take your group on a behind-the-scenes tour of Dogs Trust. The centre is always a hive of activity so this is an opportunity not to be missed. For more details call 01895 453951 or email irene.anidjah@ dogstrust.org.uk. Make sure you allow enough time to visit the delightful tithe barn tea room.

One of the many strands of the work of Dogs Trust is with those fleeing domestic abuse.

Some people want to escape a violent home but are worried about the welfare of their dog. Dogs Trust’s Freedom Project provides a confidential and free fostering service for dogs belonging to families fleeing domestic abuse. Call 0800 298 919 or see their website. Cats Protection run a similar service, called Paws Protect, for those with cats. For details see cats.org.uk.
