SUCCUMB TO HISTORIC CABIN FEVER
Some people like to scoff at how few historic homes there are in the US compared to the acres of period properties within the UK. But it’s not a fair criticism. Plenty of homes in America date back to the arrival of the original founders of the modern nation, and one home for sale at the moment in New Jersey is a good example.
Nothnagle Cabin is the oldest property of its kind in the US, experts established in 2011, and was built within the New Sweden colony in Gibbstown, New Jersey in 1638, although the cabin features ironwork dating back to 1590. It was constructed by a Finnish settler called Anthony Neilson and for several hundred years it stayed within the family before being bought by the current owner, who knew the property as a young boy.
He and his wife have maintained the cabin with extraordinary care, but are now selling it with all its furniture, furnishings and fittings.
Nothnagle Cabin is built of local oak but also bricks brought over from Europe as ballast for a ship, and although it originally featured dirt floors, it now has pine underfoot.
The cabin is only the side-show, though. Its asking price of $2.9 million includes a main house with three bedrooms built after the original cabin became too small for the Neilsons. Both properties are within a 1.3-acre plot.
