Grime-encrusted self-penned grooves
ROCK and blues fans might want to pay some attention to an up and coming (although now somewhat established) virtuoso singer-songwriter-guitarist going by the name of Robert J Hunter.
His latest release entitled ‘Say What?’ is a collection of grime encrusted self penned grooves bordering on white soul with an unexpected bite of expertly executed Ry Cooder style slide and Elmore James blues harp.
Long and slow string bends straight out of Hendrix’s personal manual are a welcome treat but Hunter’s gravel pit vocal style is undoubtedly the icing on this extraordinary piece of work that could rival any of the mainstream forerunners in this particular arena.
Only five days into its release ‘Say What?’ has climbed to number 4 on the iTunes Blues Chart.
Think Stevie Ray Vaughan, think Joe Cocker, think Robert Cray and Clapton all rolled into one. All of the above heroes have been given a run for their money here, and for your money, well £7.99 would be well spent. Have I mentioned that it’s all live? I have now. And where’s the local connection? Well there’s Uxbridge resident Greg Sheffield on drums. Robert J Hunter has a regular slot at The Spiritual Bar in Camden and negotiations are in progress to have him play an unplugged sesh on my Tuesday night radio show ASAP.
