What will replace EU support?

-

MY own home county, Cornwall, has just had good news from the EU: the current European Structural & Investment ESI, which benefits both people and the environment, will still be covered until 2020; ie after the government’s planned exit from the EU next March.

Cornwall is not alone in getting this support - but what will replace it? We now know that the so-called ‘Brexit dividend’ is a myth, so Mother May’s cupboard is going to be bare.

The Leave side promised a raft of benefits which have dwindled to nothing; and the world is now facing major trade wars. Our ‘closest ally,’ the USA, is led by a president for whom ‘ally’ has little meaning, as Canada, Mexico and Turkey have found out.

Leading Brexiters boast about ‘completing the Thatcherite revolution.’ Readers may recall this decimated much of the UK’s manufacturing industry and that the main beneficiaries were the financial sector and foreign owned conglomerates.

Boris Johnson’s “F**k business” utterance tells us a lot. UK workers have nothing to lose but their supply chains. Completing Thatcher’s revolution might benefit the existing fat cats but it is not going to help the ‘left behind.’

As the facts and implications have emerged, the general mood across the UK has swung towards Remain.

The leaders of both the Conservative and Labour parties have so far chosen to ignore this, but there are growing numbers of courageous MPs who are defying the leadership. They deserve our support.
