United’s six-goal demolition ‘what we needed’

-

WITH a bye in the extra preliminary round of the FA Trophy, Hayes & Yeading United were without a match over the weekend but were on a high after an impressive 6-0 home win on Tuesday night over local rivals Northwood.

Paul Hughes explained how pleasing it was to notch such a win: “The result against Northwood was exactly what we needed after drawing blanks in our previous two outings.

“We wanted a response from our FA Cup exit and that’s exactly what we got. Being the League’s top goalscorers is a fantastic record to have and one that certainly induces confidence in the group.

“As a manager, you learn a lot about your players when you hit bumps in the road.

“It was pleasing for me to have that winning mentality in the dressing room confirmed, as it was a different type of victory for us. We had to fight and work physically hard to establish our control in the first half.

“These attributes were exactly what we wanted to witness. Credit goes to Northwood for coming to our place high in confidence and looking to turn us over.

“I felt they were a very energetic and hard-working team and this forced us to show our aggressive edge. It was exactly the test we needed.

“We asked the players to concentrate on the basics and our midfield did particularly well in applying that work ethic and it was a reminder for the players that this is the way we want to set about all our games from now until the end of the season. If we do this, we will be a very tough nut to crack.”

This Saturday, United are back at the SkyEx Community Stadium with more local visitors in the form of Ashford Town in the Isthmian South Central Division.

On Tuesday October 9, United entertain Premier Division Potters Bar Town in the Velocity Trophy at the SkyEx Community Stadium.
