Join the fight for the enviromnent
RESIDENTS are being invited by Hammersmith and Fulham Council to help develop “radical” new environmental policies.
The council will soon set up a Climate and Ecological Emergency Commission of local people, tasked with listening to experts and coming up with ideas to help cut emissions.
Earlier this year, Labour and Tory councillors voted to declare a “climate emergency” and pledged to make the borough “net carbon zero” by 2030.
Council leader Stephen Cowan said: “There is no doubt that we are facing a climate emergency and we have to respond to that by radically adapting the way we run council services.
“If you feel passionately about the need to take urgent action I’d encourage you to join our Climate Commission and put that passion into shaping council policy.”
Interest has already been shown by members of the Hammersmith and Fulham branch of Extinction Rebellion. Branch coordinator Pat Tookey recently said their members hope to “engage” with the commission.
Ms Tookey recently spoke in favour of making food waste collections available to homes across the borough, and making Hammersmith Bridge a permanent pedestrian and cycling-only crossing.
The council’s latest announcement about the new commission comes after carrying out its programme of installing electric car charging points and building cycle lanes with TfL.
Visit the council’s website for more information on how to apply to become a member of the commission by Thursday, October 31.
