Bright stars as Chelsea hit Birmingham for six

-

LEADERS Chelsea Ladies turned on the style in front of the cameras to demolish Birmingham City 6-0 at Solihull Moors.

A near-perfect afternoon for head coach Emma Hayes was competitive only for the opening half hour as Birmingham initially responded well to the blow of falling behind within two minutes to Ji So Yun’s well struck free kick.

The superb Millie Bright, who was in commanding form throughout, then started and finished a magnificent 37th minute goal, with Guro Reiten providing the decisive pass.

Claudia Walker curled narrowly wide soon afterwards, but the points were as good as decided in first-half injury time when Bright’s brilliant long ball was well controlled by Beth England to fire past Hannah Hampton.

The visitors again made a lightning start to the second half as Drew Spence swapped passes inside the box with England to sweep home within three minutes.

Spence’s second was a header from six yards before England raced clear to score via the post in the 63rd minute.

Chelsea’s Hannah Blundell said: “The girls were at them right from the kick off but perhaps we got a bit complacent after going ahead so early on. Then the two goals just before half time put us in a great position.

“Emma [Hayes] told us to keep our standards high in the second half and that’s what happened.”
