United ‘could have reached double figures’ in demolition

DORCHESTER PICKED APART BUT BOSS WANTED BETTER FINISHING

-

DOMINANT Hayes and Yeading United sent basement club Dorchester Town on their long journey home licking their wounds after Paul Hughes’ men crushed them 5-0.

It was probably not even reflective of the action after a man of the match performance from travelling goalkeeper Shane Murphy.

United were ahead after only two minutes when Manny Duku headed home for his first since returning to the club.

On 25 minutes Dorchester were down to 10 men, following a rash challenge by Ben Rowthorn on Liam McDevitt, and four minutes later Toby Little extended the lead.

An own goal and one for Hassan Jalloh followed in first-half injury time before Duku netted another in the second half.

It was a pleasing day for boss Hughes, who said: “We were looking for a convincing performance from the players and that’s what we got.

“Previous weeks have been hampered with injuries and suspensions, which all teams go through, and our displays have been a bit hit and miss because of this. The Beaconsfield and Met Police games were well below the standards we’ve set here and I’m glad we bounced back with a very good display – there were some excellent performers out there.

“Dorchester are at the foot of the table and you could see they were a team lacking confidence.

“When we sense this in the opposition we must take advantage and try our best to dominate proceedings, which we did.

“I’ve seen us make hard work of games like this in the past because we haven’t had that ruthless streak, but here we did and, with better finishing, it could have been double figures.

“I think their goalkeeper deserves a mention because he was very impressive and even got man of the match, which is credit to him considering the scoreline.

“Some of the football we played was excellent and when a team goes down to 10 men, the key is to keep that ball moving quickly and drag them about. Some of the one-touch play was a pleasure to watch and that’s a really great compliment for the players to receive. If we can keep moving that ball quickly and with purpose then we will be very hard to contain.”

He added: “My only criticism of the lads is the finishing. We won’t get as many chances as we did here against the top teams and we need to be able to take the few chances we do get if we want a positive result.

“Let’s see how we go. Everything else was in and around the standards we want to show each week if we want to be a top team.”

They return to The SkyEx on Saturday February 1 for the visit of Gosport Borough.
