in Stoke-on-Trent dates back to the 13th century.

Ernulf de Hesing was the first owner before it belonged to Sir William de Caverswall who, in 1275, formed the moat.

The castle was rebuilt as a Jacobean mansion in 1615 by then Mayor of Stafford, Matthew Craddock, and while there have been a few changes since, it’s remained largely the same.

During the English Civil War, parliamentary forces garrisoned the castle.

It emerged unharmed and was turned into a sanctuary where Benedictine nuns fled to escape the French Revolution.

Famed for its fine china and porcelain, one of Stoke’s most famous families, the Wedgwood family, lived in the castle during the 1880s.

The property is laid out over three floors, has a converted one-bedroom gatehouse, and other outbuildings.

Caverswall Castle is for sale with Jackson-Stops (jacksonstops.co.uk), price on application.

FOR anyone looking for the perfect period home, The Old Vicarage in Beck Hill, North Lincolnshire is the answer to their prayers.

It’s steeped in local history and was the birthplace of the Rev Dr Chad Varah, founder of the Samaritans, who spent his life dedicated to providing emotional support and care for people.

The 19th century vicarage in Barton-upon-Humber is a Grade II listed building with a grand exterior and inside it still has many period features.

An original porchway leads to the entrance hall which has sash windows, deep cornicing to the ceiling and a terracotta tiled floor, as well as the staircase which boasts the original wooden handrail balustrade.

Five downstairs rooms include a formal drawing room with three-panel bay, a second sash window with original shutters and a centrepiece marble fireplace with inset cast iron fire; and a sitting room which has a magnificent solid wood fire surround.

A large portrait window on the staircase provides natural light as well as a view of St Peter’s Church. Of the four double bedrooms, the master has a four-piece Victorianstyle en-suite, as does the spacious family bathroom.

The Old Vicarage is for sale with Fine & Country (fineandcountry.com), priced £475,000.
