GOING shopping with someone who doesn’t quite understand the finer details of PPE is like going shopping with a toddler – happily touching everything in sight. Mask already fallen on the floor and gloves hanging out of their back pocket like golfers’ gloves.

Current ways of shopping are a new experience for us all. But, at least shops are opening again.

Many of us have seen lockdown as an opportunity to catch up with clearing out cupboards, so we’re waiting for charity shops to reopen so we can take them our latest donations.

There’s good news on this front.

It’s possible the RSPCA charity shops under the control of Hillingdon RSPCA will open in mid-July.

These shops are a vital source of income and their financial support is sorely missed. But, before taking them your (good-quality) items to sell, please make sure they are open and receiving donations.

At present Hillingdon RSPCA need money to pay for an eye operation for Stewie who came into their care as a stray. When he arrived, his eye was sore and fully closed and the vet thought it was a battle wound.

On closer examination, Stewie was found to have entropian which means his eyelashes are growing inwards causing him pain. Hillingdon RSPCA have started fundraising for the operation he needs.

If you would like to contribute, go to either their Facebook page or www.paypal.me/hillingdonclinic. Once Stewie has had the operation, this friendly boy will be available for homing. If you’re interested call 01895 833417.

One of the key parts of the work of the Hillingdon RSPCA is running their busy clinic in Crescent Parade, Uxbridge Road.

This is a much loved and valued asset to the local community. However, at present it’s only open for rehoming and first aid advice as they need to recruit a new vet.

If you know a qualified veterinary surgeon who could be interested, please pass on the details. It’s a lone role with support from a RVN with access to veterinarians at the managing practice.

The basic requirements are Monday-Thursday 9am-5pm with no on-call or weekends required (but this could be expanded). There is a small clinic with operating theatre, dental and ultra-sound facilities but no X-ray.

If you’re a vet and want to know more, call 07792 403389.

At a national level, the RSPCA has issued useful guidance over how we can help our pets adjust to life after lockdown is finished and we go back to work. For details, see rspca.org.uk.
