Disposable barbecues are incredibly harmful

-

WHEN will the legislators wake up and acknowledge the very real high risks posed by these portable oneoff BBQ’s. These cheap easily available devices are a menace especially in the hands of irresponsible and immature individuals.

Every year we see news reports of major fires in the countryside many a direct result of people using these items. When events get out of control they represent a serious risk to human life, property and the environment. As well they incur considerable costs both direct and indirect, which must run into millions of pounds per annum. The destruction to our countryside and the delicate environment; many such places are fragile habitats of national and international importance. It take years for such habitats to fully recover just so a minority of people for a few minutes can barbeque sausages.

DEFRA, the fire service, nature conservation groups and councils must have records and associated expenses incurred. If not why not?

For years various governments have rightly been encouraging people to visit the outdoors for fresh air and exercise. The sight of burnt acreage stretching as far as the eye can see is likely put people off and therefore is counter-productive to government’s intentions.

Hearsay reports suggest that these barbecues are also a hazard on beaches when discarded and buried whilst still alight and thereby injuring children and adults if they tread on them.

The solution is simple fast track legislation to prohibit their supply, sales and use as the pros for such action well out-weigh the negatives of these barbecues benefits.Any response or reasons from the Government why this cannot be rapidly achieved?

If readers support such a ban then write to your local MP and the Secretary of State for DEFRA.
