WAY OUT WEST NEWS OF THE WORLD Netflix

■ AFTER working together on Captain Phillips, Tom Hanks is reunited with Jason Bourne director Paul Greengrass for this Western set five years after the American Civil War. Hanks is Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a veteran soldier who travels from town to town telling non-fiction stories about presidents, monarchs and great events from around the world. In Texas he meets Johanna (Helena Zengel), a 10-year-old girl who was taken by the Kiowa people six years earlier and is now being returned to her aunt and uncle against her will. Kidd agrees to take Johanna to her family but they face huge challenges along the way.

■ GERALD Butler stars as John Garrity in this disaster movie which has shades of Armageddon and Deep Impact about it. With a comet on a collision course with Earth, Garrity, his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin) and their young son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) go on a dangerous journey to try to find somewhere safe. As they hear accounts of fragments of the comet destroying cities, their best hope seems to lie in a desperate flight to avoid the apocalypse. Smart and involving.

Using a blend of archive footage and music in his distinctiv­e collage-style, this should be as mesmerisin­g as it is illuminati­ng.
