POLICE are appealing for help in identifying a man whose body was recovered from the Grand Union Canal in Southall in 1981.

Forty years ago this week, a body of a man, whose death was not thought to have been suspicious, was pulled from the water of the Grand Union Canal in Southall.

Despite ‘extensive inquiries’ which were made following the discovery of the body in 1981, and further efforts over the past four decades, police have been unable to identify the man.

The police appeal is part of a cold case review which hopes to prompt someone to identify the man.

Officers hope the artist’s impression, which is based on how the man looked at the time of his death, will prompt someone to think about a family member or a friend they lost touch with 40 years ago who looks similar to the image.

He was a white man, 5ft 11ins tall, aged between 25 and 30, of medium build with thick brown hair which was worn short and a slight beard.

The man also had crooked teeth and a small scar on his stomach.

PC Maddie Kerketta, of the Met’s West Area Safeguarding Unit, said: “This man was a son to someone, a family member and likely a friend to others.

“There may be a family somewhere who have spent years wondering what happened to their loved one.

“If you can help us finally identify him so that his family and friends can be notified please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Police are urging anyone who has information which may help identify this man to call police on 101 or Tweet @MetCC quoting 81FOU000002.

There may a family who have spent years wondering what happened to their loved one.
