Driver fled in Uber after killing pedestrian

-

A DRIVER was more than three times over the drink driving limit and was travelling at double the speed restrictions when he ploughed into a pedestrian in West London.

William Martin, a 63-year-old who required the use of a walking stick, was thrown 15 yards along New Broadway, Ealing, in the early hours of November 14 2019.

He received emergency first aid from a horrified witness to the crash, but ultimately died at the scene.

Omad Ashraf, 31, drove off from the scene of the crash before exiting his Hyundai Santa Fe and walking back past the incident in order to get an Uber away from the area.

He appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday September 17 to be sentenced, having earlier pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

He had spent the evening of September 16, 2019, with his uncle drinking at Osterley Cricket Club in west London.

The pair then drove around central London for around three hours and “at some point” swapped seats to allow Ashraf to drive.

They made their way back to west London, where Ashraf was driving through the centre of Ealing as Mr Martin was attempting to cross a road to a bus stop at around 3.34am.

The victim began crossing the road and got halfway before he waited for another two cars to go by on the opposite carriageway.

However, he was then “struck at speed” by Ashraf, who was driving at 39mph in the 20mph zone.

Ashraf, who did not swerve or brake prior to impact, then drove off from the scene before pulling over. He promptly exited the vehicle before walking back towards the crash site, where Mr Martin lay writhing with serious injuries.

Ashraf continued past and entered an Uber to get away from the scene.

His uncle, meanwhile, tried to exit the Hyundai via the passenger-side door, but could not get it open due to the damage sustained in the collision.

Instead, he exited via the driver’s door and followed Ashraf away from the scene.

Mr Martin died at the roadside despite medical interventions from witnesses who saw the collision occur.

Ashraf was stopped by police while sitting in the front passenger seat of the Uber.

Nearly two hours after the incident, Ashraf provided a breath test of 116 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath – more than three times the drink driving limit of 35 micrograms.

Ashraf was jailed for four and a half years and banned from driving for seven years and three months.
