‘Village within a city’ described as a ‘quiet oasis’
AREA STILL WELCOMING, SIX YEARS ON FROM AWARD WIN
PITSHANGER in Ealing has been labelled a “village within a city” and a “quiet oasis away from bustling city life”.
The small “village” is home to a high street which has won awards for its “welcoming feel” and “friendly faces”.
Pitshanger Lane was crowned the Great British High Street of the Year in 2015, beating three other London finalists to grab top spot.
With a strong community spirit, supporting more than 50 independent businesses, the atmosphere in Pitshanger Lane is lively and still well deserving of the award six years later.
The lane is bursting with a wide range of shops, restaurants, coffee spots and gastro pubs.
For those looking for peace and quiet, the beautiful Pitshanger Park is on your doorstep.
The small village is also home to the prestigious Brentham Club.
The tennis club was home to Wimbledon champion Fred Perry and still holds grass tennis matches throughout the summer.
Peter Crouch grew up in the area and his parents still live near the high street.
The famous footballer’s favourite curry house is in Pitshanger Lane – The Samrat.
The restaurant’s food has even been ordered to Buckingham Palace by Prince William.
The Great British High Street Awards is an initiative backed by the Department for Communities and Local Government, designed to recognise flourishing high streets in the UK.
Pitshanger Lane was recognised by an expert judging panel which was made up of representatives from retail giants such as Boots, Costa, Marks & Spencer, the Post Office, Google and Argos.
It was a remarkable award considering the hundreds of entries representing shopping destinations in the capital.
Competition judges praised its “great community spirit, social media campaign and a commitment to supporting local retailers”.
One of the judges on the panel, Dr Walker, said: “Pitshanger Lane has a delightful variety of independent shops and small businesses.
“The traders should feel very proud of their achievements and I would encourage everyone to pop along and see what makes it such a deserving winner.”
