Drink-driver ploughed into elderly pedestrian
CALLOUS OMAD ASHRAF TRIED TO
CCTV footage has shown the moment a callous driver who was three times over the drink-drive limit tried to flee after ploughing into an elderly pedestrian.
Omad Ashraf, 31, was also driving at twice the speed limit when the fatal hitand-run took place along New Broadway, Ealing, in the early hours of November 14, 2019.
William Martin, a 63-year-old who required the aid of a walking stick, was thrown 15 yards along the road after being struck at 39mph in the 20mph zone.
He received emergency first aid from horrified members of the public who witnessed the incident, but later died at the scene.
After the collision, “cowardly” Ashraf drove off from the scene before exiting his Hyundai Santa Fe.
He then walked back past the scene in order to get an Uber and try to flee the area.
He appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday September 17 to be sentenced having earlier pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
Having spent the evening of September 16, 2019, with his uncle drinking at Osterley Crickey Club in West London, the pair proceeded to embark on a
three-hour drive around Central London.
Ashraf’s uncle drove for the most part, but he took over the wheel “at some point” during the journey before they returned to the Ealing area.
Mr Martin was crossing the road to get to a bus stop at around 3.34am when he was “struck at speed” by Ashraf, who did not stop at the scene.
Specialists analysis found that Ashraf did not apply the brakes, nor was there any alteration in his steering prior to the crash.
Despite significant damage to the passenger’s side of the vehicle, he continued driving along the road before exiting the Hyundai.
His uncle, meanwhile, tried to exit the Hyundai via the passenger-side door, but could not get it open due to the damage sustained in the collision.
Instead, he exited via the driver’s door and followed Ashraf away from the scene.
Ashraf was stopped by police while sitting in the front passenger seat of the Uber.
Nearly two hours after the incident, he provided a breath test of 116 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath – more than three times the drink driving limit of 35 micrograms.
Ashraf was jailed for four and a half years and banned from driving for seven years and three months.
