Animal Rescue with Marion Garnett

- Dedicated animal expert Marion Garnett, founder of the Ealing Animal Charities Fair, continues her column

YOU can’t miss these two live wires perched in a pen halfway down the yard. They’ve got a fabulous view of what’s going on and they make it their business to ensure they make full use of it.

Not that you’d want to walk past without saying hello. If you remember the National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) look after the animals in their care using the Open Paw system. This means that, when they go past, visitors are encouraged to give the animals food from the pots outside their pens.

This food is part of the animal’s daily food allowance. Stag and Kali have given this arrangement the thumbs up and are, understandably, on the lookout for visitors.

These two Patterdale Terriers love human attention. They enjoy being busy and going on long walks. They are looking for new owners who have owned terriers before. They’re not completely comfortable around other dogs and need further socialisation and training.

You can see more details at nawt.org.uk or visit them at the rehoming centre, Tylers Way, Watford-by-pass WD25 8WT.

If they haven’t been rehomed by then, Stag and Kali will have plenty to look at on Saturday December 4 (11am-3pm) as that is when NAWT are holding their Christmas Fair. There will be stalls, mince pies and mulled wine.

You’ll be able to visit the café and look round the centre. NAWT are asking visitors to park in the nearby Mercure hotel car park but, importantly, you must register your car at Mercure’s reception.

From December 1 until December 24, NAWT are holding their Shoe Box Appeal.

All you have to do is find a box, fill it with food, toys or treats for cats, dogs, rabbits or guinea pigs, wrap it in Christmas paper and, the best bit of all, drop it off at the centre (address above) during opening hours and then go and see the animals.

Finally, if you’re thinking of making a donation to NAWT, giving that money between November 30 and December 6 could mean your donation is worth double.

Thanks to a pledge promise from PetPlan Charitable Trust, they have a Pledge Pot of £25,000 which can be unlocked by supporters donating in Double Donations week. For example, if you donate under this scheme, a £5 donation will be worth £10 to NAWT at no extra cost to you. NAWT are hoping to raise £50,000 for a new Pet Care in the Community scheme.

For details about donating under this scheme see nawt.org.uk.
