THE NEW SOCIAL MEDIA STARS

Meet the young Brits turning online fame into cold hard cash

-

T hey hang out with everyone from Ed Sheeran to the Pope, travel the world staying in plush resorts, get showered with free stuff and boast more viewers than some TV channels. Big brands can chuck £10k at them for posting a few Instagram snaps – and they do all this from their living room, bedroom or garden shed.

Meet the social influencers: the savvy young Brits who’ve become global celebs, thanks to the pics and videos they share on Youtube, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat. Whether it’s Zoella becoming the UK’S fastest-selling author or Joe Wicks earning £1m every month, this new breed of online stars is changing the fame game. They’re so powerful, even traditional stars are taking note – Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid can make up to £100,000 per social media post.

DANIELLE PEAZER (28) @Daniellepeazer 161k 3m 1.2m Death threats from vicious trolls made Danielle consider going offline after splitting from boyfriend Liampayne in 2013. She’s probably glad she didn’t, as she’s reinvented herself as a social media star, posting workout routines and healthy eating tips.

JACK & FINN HARRIES (23) Jacksgap 4.1m 2.3m 1.8m The identical twins may have finished the Youtube vlog that charted (and funded) their gap year adventures, but they still have an army of teenage girl fans.

DAN HOWELL & PHIL LESTER @danisnotonfire and @Amazingphil 6.3m 4.7m 4m The daft clips posted by this duo has led to them presenting BBC Radio 1 shows, and touring the US. The videos include such gems as “Cutting Snowflakes From Paper” (nearly 3m views).

ISKRA LAWRENCE (26) @iskra 38.6k 149k 3.3m Iskra was once turned down by an agent because her hips were “too big”, but the size-14 model– who refuses to retouch her Insta pics – has definitely had the last laugh with big-buck deals with US underwear brand Aerie.

CASPAR LEE (22) @dicasp 7.1m 4.38m 3.8m Caspar might look like all of 1D put into a blender, but he’s also got famous mates to rival the boys. Cara Delevingne, Ed Sheeran and Seth Rogen have all appeared in Caspar’s videos, and he’s been linked to TV presenter Laura Whitmore.

TANYA BURR (27) @Tanyaburr 3.6m 2.5m 3.1m Once, Tanya’s make-up advice went no further than the Norwich department store where she worked. Now she broadcasts it to 3.6m Youtube followers every week. Her beauty tutorials are so successful ,Tanya now sits on FROWS and has her own Superdrug range.

DAN MIDDLETON (25) DANTDM 14.4m 914k 2.2m You won’t know what Minecraft is unless you’re a) under the age of ten or b) a parent. The video game is estimated to earn Dan up to $2.15m a year a year, by vlogging about it from his Northamptonshire home. He’s so famous, even his pet pugs are celebs. Dan angered parents recently after the fire brigade called him “irresponsible and thoughtless” for setting fire to a toy penguin with a blowtorch. He was trying to give it a haircut at the time.

JOE SUGG (25) Thatcherjoe 7.8m 4.2m 5.8m Zoella’s little bro was a roofer (that explains the Youtube name) when he started uploading videos of himself doing pranks and impressions. Now, he’s a celeb in his own right, thanks to footage showing him larking around with then-flatmate Caspar Lee (left) or being smeared in make-up by his big sister. His videos have been viewed nearly a billion times, while he’s also written two graphic novels and briefly dated Perrie from Little Mix last year.

KSI (23) Ksiolajidebt 16.3m 2.73m 4.4m KSI: I Am A Bellend runs the title of his 2015 book. He clearly isn’t. For starters, he’s got nearly 5m more Youtube followers than Zoella, is reckoned to be worth a whopping £3.6m and is a part-time rapper, too – last year’s Keep Up album hit No13, spawning hit single Lamborghini (he drives one of those, too). KSI has earned it all by doing the kind of job every spotty teenage boy dreams of – playing video games, although he’s just as likely to vlog about his KFC addiction, which he probably gets for free.

ZOELLA (27) @zoella 11.6m 7.8m 10.6m Zoella – Zoe Sugg to her mum – has come a long way from the shy teenager who filmed make-up tips in her bedroom back in 2009. Today, she holds the record for being the fastest-selling debut author in history with 2014 novel Girl Online selling 78,000 copies in its first week. You can even buy Zoella-branded lipstick and doormats, thanks to her beauty and homeware ranges. She has a waxwork in Madame Tussauds, sung on the Band Aid 30 single and is worth an estimated £1.24m. She also reigns supreme as queen of the social media Britpack – boyfriend Alfie and brother Joe (see left) often pop up in her vlogs. But it’s not all bouncy videos gabbling about new eyeliners or recent ASOS hauls. Zoella has won praise from mental health charities after being vocal about the crippling anxiety she’s suffered since she was 14, which once made her so scared, she turned down the chance to meet Prince Harry. She currently lives in a £1m Brighton mansion with Alfie and pet pug Nala.
