PERFECT LITTLE LIARS
Big Little Lies is THE must-watch drama of the month – but is it ever acceptable to tell a fib?
There’s nothing quite like a whodunit murder mystery to capture the imagination, but HBO’S latest brilliant offering, Big Little Lies, takes things one giant step further, as we spend the entire series also trying to figure out who it was done to! This gripping central mystery (and the jaw-dropping twist that follows) is reason enough to make the show unmissable, but it’s just one of a long list.
Sumptuously shot, this darkly comic drama takes us into the heart of the suffocatingly neurotic world of wealthy Monterey mothers. From pass-agging at the school gates to backstabbing over kids’ birthday parties, there are plenty of delicious rivalries and dark secrets among these competitive alpha females. And these are no average women: the three central characters are played by serious Hollywood talent. Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon excels as superbly bitchy stay-at-home mum Madeline, who perhaps doesn’t appreciate her current husband quite as much as she does her ex, who’s unfortunately now shacked up with boho babe Bonnie (Fury Road’s Zoë Kravitz).
Madeline’s BFF is former lawyer Celeste (Nicole Kidman), whose marriage to the super-hot Perry (True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgård) is nowhere near as perfect as she makes out (although these two do get pretty steamy, pretty often). Madeline and Celeste also befriend new-girl-in-town Jane (Divergent star Shailene Woodley), who is struggling to cope with a terrible event from her past.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, made by the director of Wild and Dallas Buyers Club, and with Nicole and Reese both acting as executive producers, it’s one of HBO’S most successful dramas of recent years. And the controversial storylines, breathtaking scenery and non-stop revelations guarantee it’s THE show everyone will be talking about. You won’t want to miss a thing…
