The best new books out this week
Truly Madly Guilty LIANE MORIARTY (PENGUIN, £7.99)
If, like us, you’ve been obsessively enjoying Big Little Lies, then you must clear a reading slot for this novel by the same author. It follows three couples whose lives are devastated when something untoward happens at a barbecue – and trust us when we say it’s anything but straightforward. With a plot that picks at a myriad of themes – including infertility, hoarding and PTSD – and characters who are multi-layered, unique and believable, Truly Madly Guilty is as brilliantly accomplished as it is dark, twisty and compulsive. No wonder Reese Witherspoon is such a huge Moriarty fan. HHHH Isabelle Broom
He Said She Said ERIN KELLY (HODDER & STOUGHTON, £12.99)
During a total eclipse, Laura witnesses what she believes to be a rape. She and boyfriend Kit call the police, but it soon becomes a case of, yep, he said she said between alleged attacker, uncertain witness and possible victim. Fifteen years later, that fateful night is still affecting all involved, and soon long-buried secrets and lies are being brought back into the light. Gripping and atmospheric, this intelligent thriller raises real moral questions and keeps you guessing with one twist after another. HHHH Lisa Howells
The Killer On The Wall EMMA KAVANAGH (ARROW, £6.99)
Isla Bell is only 15 when she discovers three dead bodies propped up against Hadrian’s Wall. The killer is soon caught, but the event stays with Isla, and eventually she goes on to become a forensic psychologist. Fast-forward 20 years, and another victim shows up in the same place…then another. Can Isla work out who’s behind the grisly murders and, more importantly, why they committed them in the first place? Tense, disturbing, gritty and unashamedly macabre, this is a must for crime fans. HHHH Sarah Hughes
