The exciting Twin Peaks reboot is shrouded in secrecy, but we’ve got details to spill
SKY ATLANTIC & NOW TV, SUNDAY 21 MAY, 2AM & TUESDAY 23 MAY, 9PM
Such is the level of anticipation surrounding this reboot of classic TV drama Twin Peaks, that it is being shrouded in almost total secrecy. No one’s allowed to see it in advance, and little is confirmed except for Kyle Maclachlan returning as loveable, eccentric FBI agent Dale Cooper, who led the search for the killer of Laura Palmer in the original series. Luckily, we’ve also gleaned a few more things about this new series…
IT’S A LYNCH-A-THON
After multiple stops and starts since the first rumours of a Twin Peaks revival emerged, it was finally confirmed last year that original co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost had written 18 new episodes, that Lynch would direct them all himself, and that they’d be shown 25 years after the original series aired. Of course, that first series was a murder mystery like no other, starting with the discovery of Laura’s body, but then developing into a phantasmagorical portrait of a smalltown community filled with perverse secrets and peculiar characters.
THE RUMOURS
What most fans assume is that the new reboot will be set 25 years after the end of the previous series, when, spookily, Cooper entered the extra-dimensional realm called the Black Lodge (we told you it was weird) and encountered the ghostly figure of Laura Palmer, who told him, “I’ll see you again in 25 years.” We hear the narrative will revolve around a reopening of that mystery, with further explorations of the original enigmas that fans are still pondering. The boss of Showtime says, “There’s a very compelling spine through this story, and yet there are diversions, tangents, fantasy.” Whatever happens, we cannot wait for the big double-bill premiere, which is being simulcast with the US airing on Sky, with a regular primetime slot on Tuesday, too. Bring it on!
