Sienna Miller and Amy Adams help us solve our summer hair horrors
We’ve gone back to basics to resolve the ultimate haircare problems, once and for all
GIVE IT SHINE
“Dry hair will often need extra shine,” says Collette Mcgee, Live Educator for Bumble and bumble. “A lack of hydration in the hair causes it to become less reflective. Blondes and those who bleach will suffer more, as darker hair is better at reflecting light.”
SOLVE THE PROBLEM:
“If your hair is fine, a lightweight dry oil will add a soft reflection. Those with fuller hair can build shine through shampoos and conditioners. Using a mask once a week will also replace the moisture in the cortex of the hair, rehydrating it and, as a result, boosting the shine.” Vanessa’s fave – and ours, too!
BEAT THE FRIZZ
“Frizz is a result of cuticles becoming raised,” explains Collette. “Sufferers fall into two camps: those who have hair with a naturally bushy texture, and those whose texture is affected by wear and tear. In both cases, steps can be taken to battle the problem.”
SOLVE THE PROBLEM:
“In both hair types, damage to the hair cuticle is often caused by combing and brushing hair when wet. Solve this by using a brush specifically designed for use on wet hair, until it’s nearly dry. Then use a primer specific to your hair type to protect and create the perfect base. Warm environments can also make hair even more vulnerable to frizz so, if necessary, follow with an anti-humidity product.”
MAKE IT GROW
“Lack of growth occurs when the roots of the hair become blocked from excess sebum, slowing down the growth cycle,” warns Collette. “If you regularly over-colour or abuse your locks with hot tools, you may also suffer from hair that doesn’t seem to grow.”
SOLVE THE PROBLEM:
“Using a shampoo that exfoliates the scalp will help unclog roots. It’s important to really massage the product into the roots, as this will help stimulate the hair follicles. Follow with conditioner to seal and protect the hair strand, plus a booster spray to promote growth.”
UP THE VOLUME
“Lack of volume isn’t just limited to those of us with fine density,” says Bumble and bumble’s Collette. “Those with hair that appears thicker due to high density also suffer. This is mainly due to the finer/medium strands not being strong enough to create lift, causing hair to appear flat.”
SOLVE THE PROBLEM:
“Volume starts in the shower. Use a volumising shampoo and conditioner, then apply a primer to the hair – this will act as a base for your thickening products. Next, take the nozzle off your hairdryer and dry roots using your hands to create tension. Finally, once the hair is partly dry, add a structuring product to create lift and speed up the rest of your blow-dry time.”
