BBC1, TUESDAY 5 SEPTEMBER, 9PM

Back in 2015, when we didn’t know any better, we thought

Doctor Foster was going to be a cosy drama about a lovely lady medic who tended to cuts and scrapes in a sleepy village. Oh, how wrong we were. Instead, we got a tale of secrets, lies, infidelity and revenge Shakespeare wishes he’d been around to write. Suranne Jones played Gemma Foster, who went medieval on hubby Simon’s (Bertie Carvel) ass when she found out he was not only shagging 23-year-old Kate (Jodie Comer), but that he’d got her pregnant. Series one ended with Gemma wiping the floor with, and then wiping her hands of, them. So, what can we expect now it’s back?

ROUND TWO

“It’s two years later, and on the surface, Gemma’s got her life together,” says Suranne. “She’s back to being a doctor, which has been like her therapy. But now Simon’s back in her life…” And he’s quite the changed man, says Bertie. “Series one was mostly from Gemma’s perspective, Simon was just trying to spin plates and juggle everything. This time, Simon’s coming in with his own

agenda.” And believe us when we say the gloves are definitely off. EXTRA EDGE Part of series one’s phenomenal success was down to how much we could all identify with first Gemma’s suspicions that Simon was playing away, and then her fury when she found out she was right and he was a big, fat liar. Thankfully, that hasn’t changed. “Series one tapped into our anxiety about cheating, and this series is equally relatable,” says Bertie. “Both Gemma and Simon have been left with scars from the relationship, so it looks at how do you move on when the other person’s still out there?” And, as dark as the first series was, Suranne promises two will have even more edge. “When she sees Simon, every ounce of upset, torment and hatred floods back. She can’t control herself,” she tells us. But what we really want to know is, is there anything like THAT dinner-party scene to look forward to? “There are a few set pieces,” laughs Suranne. “There’s one in episode one, and an amazing one in episode five…” Oh, we are so there.
