They’ve been inseparable over the past week, but Selena Gomez isn’t ready to take her relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber to the next level – until he can prove he’s changed his ways.
The childhood sweethearts have been pictured on a number of wholesome dates – going to church, hanging out at his house and even bike-riding together – after it was revealed that Selena had split from boyfriend-of-tenmonths The Weeknd. And insiders tell heat that the actress is understandably wary of getting back with the Sorry singer.
“Justin’s desperate for them to become a proper couple again, but she needs time to think about whether it’s the right thing to do,” our source says. “Firstly, she wants to be sure he’s not seeing other girls. Then there’s the partying, and friends such as Chris Brown who need to be off the scene. If Selena’s going to risk it all and make a go of it with Justin, she can’t deal with any more drama. Bottom line is, he has to prove he’s changed this time and grown up because promises won’t cut it any more.”
Selena, 25, and Justin, 23, finally ended their four-year on/off relationship in 2014, amid rumours of his cheating and several brushes with the law. She began dating The Weeknd earlier this year, but they struggled to find time to make it work with the singer in the midst of a world tour and the romance is said to have fizzled out a few weeks ago. Now it’s over, Selena’s thinking about what she really wants in a relationship – especially after her recent kidney transplant gave her a new outlook on life.
“Right now, Selena and Justin are taking it slowly and she’s told him that they are going to stay that way for at least three months,” our source adds. “She wants to see if he really has calmed down and changed the way he says he has. If he’s willing to wait for her, then she’ll believe that he’s beat his demons. She wants to see him stick to his new healthy lifestyle. Partying and having fun once in a while is fine with her, but she’s not cool with his all-night benders. That’s a deal breaker.”
While other men may be put off by this, we’re told Justin is happy to accept the challenge. “Selena’s demands are intense, but Justin likes a challenge and he has calmed down a lot,” says the insider. “He still feels like she’s the one he wants to marry, so he’s ready to try.”
