Ingrid Goes West
Cert 15, 98 minutes, in cinemas 17 November
Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Elizabeth Olsen, O’shea Jackson Jr Director: Matt Spicer
THE PLOT Social-media addict Ingrid bounces back from a breakdown when she heads west to reinvent herself as a fashionable boho California girl, insinuating herself into the life of Instagram star Taylor (Olsen).
WHAT’S RIGHT WITH IT? The smart screenplay subtly skewers the world it’s depicting, making us care about someone who is, after all, a bit of a stalker. Jackson Jr, rather the weak link of Straight Outta Compton, is a charming revelation here as the Batman-obsessed love interest.
WHAT’S WRONG WITH IT? Be prepared to cross the pain threshold.
VERDICT One of the most squirminducing films you’ll see this year, but also one of the freshest and entertaining of the moment. Charles Gant
