Kylie: ‘i’m stronger after my breakdown’

The singer’s got her mojo back after heartbreak

-

She’s rarely seen without a smile on her face, but in an incredibly honest interview, Kylie Minogue has revealed that her break-up from fiancé Joshua Sasse a year ago led her to have a “nervous breakdown”.

She confessed last week, “I just wanted to stop. I knew I needed to heal… my physical system was compromised.” The pop star – who releases new album Golden in April – headed to Thailand to recuperate with two friends, and said the time allowed her to “reclaim myself, get strong and get going”.

Kylie, 49, met actor Joshua, 30, in 2015 on the set of his show Galavant, and they were engaged a year later – but rumours were rife that her friends and family didn’t like him, and they split last February amid stories he’d cheated. Kylie admits, “It wasn’t the right union. I’ve never been that woman, that girl who dreams of walking down the aisle.”

And although she says she’s optimistic about finding love again – declaring, “I’ll give it a try” – she has ruled out having any children. “No, not for me. It would be a lie to say there’s not a bit of sadness there, but I don’t get caught up in it,” she admits. “I can’t. I mean, what can I do? And there’s a high probability, if or when I meet someone, that they will have children anyway. So I could imagine being a stepmum.”

Kylie has had a rocky love life over the years. After a teenage romance with her Neighbours co-star Jason Donovan, the singer dated INXS frontman Michael Hutchence for two years – and the pair remained close until his death in 1997. She’s also had long-term relationships with actor Olivier Martinez, 52 – who she credited for helping her through her breast cancer battle – and model Andrés Velencoso, 39.

For now, friends say she really is happy being single. “Despite what some people think, Kylie is happy on her own and has realised she doesn’t need a man to make her life complete,” an insider says. “It may not have been the life she thought she’d have, but she’s embracing it all. If the right man comes along, then great, but for now, she’s just concentrating on herself.”

And with her 50th birthday coming up in May, we’re told Kylie is approaching the milestone in a positive way. The singer has even said she might do “something a bit out of character, like throw a massive party”.

We’ll be waiting for our invite. n
