Jessie J: It’s all about the money, money, money
Singer gets major reboot to career
You may have been wondering where Jessie J has been over the last couple of years. Or maybe you haven’t, but we’ll tell you anyway. She’s only gone and won a huge talent show in China, and is now set to rake in millions.
The 30-year-old singer had faded into the background in the last couple of years – her last big job saw her as a coach on The Voice Australia in 2016 – but she’s back with a vengeance. Jessie has been taking part in the Chinese show Singer for the last three months. She was crowned the winner in an emotional episode, which saw a billion people tune in to watch Jessie – the first-ever international contestant in the professional singing show – receive almost half of the votes. Clips of her belting out diva ballads such as I Will Always Love You went viral, and fans were thrilled to see her back on stage.
The singer posted this message on Instagram: “My team and I have been in China for 3.5 months. It’s been an amazing learning experience for all of us. We worked hard. I won the show last night. But what we all won was the beginning of something really magical.”
People were shocked to see Jessie – a Brit Award-winning artist who’s sold millions worldwide – taking part in the Chinese competition, but in the last few years, the singer’s fame had nose-dived alongside rumours of diva behaviour. While working as a coach on both the British and Australian versions of The Voice, it was claimed Jessie demanded luxury accommodation, bossed around make-up artists, and even banned BBC executives from entering her dressing room.
During her stint in Oz, Jessie changed management to team up with Benji and Joel Madden. The superstar twin bros, from rock band Good Charlotte (who are married to Cameron Diaz and Nicole Richie respectively) made the decision to enter Jessie into the Chinese competition – which was clearly a smart move for the Londoner.
Celebrity agent Jonathan Shalit believes Jessie’s bank balance might be about to sky rocket. He’s said, “If she gets it right, it’s an easy £20million – we shouldn’t underestimate the Chinese market. It was a genius move by her and her management.
